Universality of jammed frictional packing

چکیده
Understanding disordered particle packings is of great significance from both theoretical and engineering perspectives. Establishing a quantitative relationship between nonspherical shape packing properties generally challenging, due to the complex geometry topology. Here we resolve this issue by numerically investigating jammed various frictional congruent particles, including superellipsoids polyhedra, over wide range friction coefficients. We discover several universal characteristics across different shapes frictions. In infinite limit, coordination numbers for all approach identical lower bound jamming. The resulting ``random loose packing'' (RLP) state possesses minimal structural correlations, with fraction as simple monotonic decreasing function orientation-averaged excluded volume shapes. Packings finite can then be understood via perturbative based on RLP. nature RLP illuminated percolation transition contacting network during quasistatic densification process. Moreover, large-scale density fluctuations are also strongly suppressed, broadening previous claim hyperuniformity frictionless ones.

Jammed frictional tetrahedra are hyperstatic.
We prepare packings of frictional tetrahedra with volume fractions ϕ ranging from 0.469 to 0.622 using three different experimental protocols under isobaric conditions. Analysis via x-ray microtomography reveals that the contact number Z grows with ϕ, but does depend on the preparation protocol. While there exist four different types of contacts in tetrahedra packings, our analysis shows that t...
متن کاملUniversality of Random Close Packing ?
In 1611 Kepler proposed that the densest packing of spheres could be achieved by stacking close-packed planes of spheres. In such a packing, the spheres occupy π/ √ 18 ≈74.05% of space. The Kepler conjecture was (almost certainly) proved in 1998 by Thomas Hales. When we pour a large number of equal-sized spheres in a container and shake them down, we do not obtain the Kepler packing. Rather a d...
متن کاملUniversality Classes for Force Networks in Jammed Matter
We study the geometry of forces in some simple models for granular stackings. The information contained in geometry is complementary to that in the distribution of forces in a single inter-particle contact, which is more widely studied. We present a method which focuses on the fractal nature of the force network and find good evidence of scale invariance. The method enables us to distinguish un...
متن کاملJamming of frictional spheres and random loose packing†
The role of the friction coefficient, m, on the jamming properties of disordered, particle packings is studied using computer simulations. Compressed, soft-sphere packings are brought towards the jamming transition—the point where a packing loses mechanical stability—by decreasing the packing fraction. The values of the packing fraction at the jamming transition, fmc, gradually decrease from th...
متن کاملForce mobilization and generalized isostaticity in jammed packings of frictional grains.
We show that in slowly generated two-dimensional packings of frictional spheres, a significant fraction of the friction forces lie at the Coulomb threshold-for small pressure p and friction coefficient mu , about half of the contacts. Interpreting these contacts as constrained leads to a generalized concept of isostaticity, which relates the maximal fraction of fully mobilized contacts and cont...
